Integrated vs Split Flexneon: The Complete Guide to LED Signage
Share
When designing a custom LED neon sign, the underlying technology matters just as much as the aesthetic design. At UV Neon, we manufacture signs using both Integrated and Split flexneon.
While we can build either style based on customer preference, our default recommendation is Split flexneon. This post explains the technical differences between the two methods and highlights why the split technique consistently delivers a superior result for custom text and logos.
Understanding the Technology
Before looking at the visual differences, it is helpful to understand how both types of LED neon are constructed on the factory floor.
- Integrated Flexneon: This is a co-extruded, one-piece product. The LED strip is factory-sealed directly inside a solid silicone or PVC jacket.
- Split Flexneon: This is a two-part modular system. It utilises an independent silicone diffuser jacket and a separate, ultra-thin LED strip that our technicians insert during the assembly process.
Why UV Neon Defaults to Split Flexneon
For custom art, brand logos, and interior decor, Split flexneon provides distinct advantages in both visual quality and overall value.
1. Seamless Cursive Joins
The most significant visual benefit of split flex is its optical continuity. In cursive or joined-up text, integrated neon requires physical cuts at fixed intervals. These cuts create visible dark gaps or shadows between the letters where the thick silicone walls meet.
Because split flex uses an independent jacket, we can run one continuous piece of silicone over multiple LED segments. This entirely eliminates the dark gaps and creates a fluid, unbroken line of light that perfectly replicates traditional hand-blown glass.
2. Bespoke Colours and Daytime Aesthetics
Integrated neon typically relies on pre-tinted silicone. If you order a pink sign, the tubing remains pink on your wall 24 hours a day.
Split flex allows for total component modularity. We can pair coloured LED strips with pure white silicone jackets. This ensures your sign looks clean and minimalist when switched off during the day, before revealing its vibrant colour when powered on. Furthermore, this modularity allows us to create bespoke shades. By mixing a purple LED strip with a white jacket, we can produce a custom lilac hue that standard integrated factories cannot supply.
3. Maximum Brightness
The physics of light diffusion make split neon the brighter option. Integrated neon buries the LEDs deep inside a thick, solid block of co-extruded silicone. This material acts as a light sink and absorbs a noticeable percentage of the illumination. Split flex places the LED strip much closer to the surface of the diffuser, resulting in a punchier, highly vivid glow that easily cuts through ambient room lighting.
4. Cost-Effective Assembly
It is a common misconception that integrated neon is a simpler, cheaper product. Factory data shows that integrated neon is highly labour-intensive to customise. Cutting, sealing, and soldering the heavy co-extruded segments requires significant manual effort, which drives up the manufacturing cost. Split neon is highly efficient to assemble, allowing us to focus our craftsmanship on the complex bending of the design while keeping the final price lower for our customers.
The Case for Integrated Flexneon
While split flex is our standard for custom signage, we happily manufacture integrated signs for clients who specifically request them.
Because integrated neon is factory-sealed, it produces an incredibly uniform, solid line. This specific aesthetic is sometimes preferred for block shapes, micro-designs, or strict architectural outlines where the slightly heavier, robust look of the tubing is desired. If your project demands this specific finish, UV Neon can perfectly match those requirements.
